A BALCONET [or balconette] is an architectural term used to describe a false balcony, or railing on the outside of a window that reaches to the floor, and having—when the window is open—the appearance of a balcony. Balconets are often referred to as Juliet balconies after the scene from Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet, in which Juliet utters the famous words, “O Romeo, Romeo! wherefore art thou Romeo?” from a balconet in the Capulets’ orchard. Juliet balconies are common France, Spain, and Italy, and have been featured numerous times here at This Is Glamorous. Here is a beautiful slideshow of 22 of our favourite Juliet balconies . . .
